About:
Zalul Environmental Association is Israel's leading environmental group founded in 1999 with the goal of protecting the seas and rivers of Israel through conservation, activism, research, awareness-raising and education. For the past nine years Zalul has been initiating local and national campaigns that target unchallenged municipalities, corporations and the national government on their negligence and destruction of Israel’s most precious resource - water. Zalul’s battles for environmental protection are waged on many fronts, ensuring their effectiveness and concrete gains in the environmental field: community and grassroots, general public awareness, legal and legislative levels. Each campaign stems from a public need that is translated into an effective effort combining all these efforts. Zalul utilizes professional research, involves the overall public through activism and publicity, targets the relevant bodies (governmental agencies, private sector, factories, etc.) and lobbies for policy and legislative change. The Zalul team is comprised of professionals from various fields: advocacy, academia, environmental specialists, lawyers, public relations experts, lobbyists, volunteers and concerned citizens. Although a small group, the Zalul teams’ potency lies in devoting their expertise in diverse fields for environmental change in Israel.

- Saving the coral reefs in the Gulf of Eilat- Zalul successfully saved the coral reef in the Gulf of Eilat from "death by pollution". The campaign to save the coral reef led to the creation of a safety phosphate mechanism in Eilat's port and improvements to the sewage system in the city of Eilat. The final obstacle in insuring the longevity of the reef is the fish cages in the Gulf. Finally in June 2005, a government decision was made that the cages have to be removed from the sea by 2008. This decision has international implications for many developing countries regarding their sea-life preservation efforts. - Upgrading the Sewage Treatment Facility in Herzliya- Herzliya will upgrade its sewage treatment facility as a result of Zalul's campaign. After a year-long battle, the municipality of Herzliya agreed to upgrade the city's sewage treatment facility after they were discharging partially treated sewage near Tel Aviv's and Herzliya's most popular beaches, - Bringing Life Back to the Naaman River -The Naaman River, one of the most polluted rivers in Israel, is located in Acco in northern Israel. Several villages and factories dumped sewage into the Naaman River. Zalul's campaign to protect the river resulted in all the villages and factories finding alternative solutions for their sewage, which resulted in the Naaman's rejuvenation. It is now possible to see wildlife coming to the river. - Cleaning up the Lachish River –Once a perennial river, now the majority of the Lachish River is merely an intermittent stream and the clear water has been exchanged for wastewater and urban and industrial sewage. “Don’t Say Kaddish for the Lachish” was Zalul’s slogan for the campaign to save the Lachish River running between the cities of Ashkelon and Ashdod. After an in-depth study was undertaken to determine the pollution sources and the variety of pollutants, a major public campaign was begun with wide-media coverage. Pressure from the public has led to the involvement of the Mayor of Ashdod and the Ministry of the Environment in the creation of the Lachish Committee, headed by the Mayor and responsible for the river’s rehabilitation – since it’s creation, the Mayor of Ashdod has now pledged to completely eliminate all pollution of the river by the municipality by summer 2008.
