Two love stories with one common thread – Anton Chekhov. Celebrated Irish playwright Brian Friel based his plays on Chekhov’s works: The first play, The Yalta Game, on Lady with a Lapdog, and the second, Afterplay, on two characters from two different Chekhov plays, Uncle Vanya and Three Sisters.
The Yalta Game They come to Yalta on holiday. Each for his own reasons. Dmitry Dmitrich Gurov holidays in Yalta every year. This time, as his vacation draws to an end, he meets Anna Sergeyevna, a lady with a lapdog, in Yalta for the first time. Although they are both married, they sit together in a caf? at the square and play the Yalta Game – divining other lives or investing the lives of others with an imagined life, while meanwhile… falling in love. The affair ends when Anna has to return to her sick husband. Is this truly the end of their love affair? Will it last over distance and real ‘life’.
Afterplay She had an uncle, Vanya. He had sisters, three altogether. Twenty years go by. They meet at a run-down Moscow caf?. They don’t know each other, but destiny has its own goals and plans. Will the lies help find new love? Will memories and the connection with the past prevail? One playwright has created them, another playwright brings them together for a single evening, and a farewell Brian Friel writes: Of course, we can enjoy the intimacy and ‘togetherness’ between the two of them without knowing where they came from, but when we find out that Sonya is a refugee from Uncle Vanya, and that Andrey is Three Sisters’ brother, the plot becomes richer.
